My son was admitted to the [Unit] after a very challenging ER course and 10 days of prior illness. He was having high fevers and increasing lethargy. He had abnormal lab work, a sepsis workup, and was also found to have appendicitis. He was admitted and then planned for the OR at 0800. That morning, Pema Diki took over as [patient]’s nurse. She could immediately see how ill he had become. She was diligent in his care and his comfort. She was at his bedside providing every comfort measure she could for him. He was unable to get into the OR until much later in the day. As the day went forward, his fever would not subside. His heart rate was elevating. He was requiring oxygen. He was lethargic. Many new orders were coming in for him. Pema was [patient]'s biggest advocate. She was involved in every conversation. She was talking to every doctor possible. When lab work was ordered, she advocated for that to be done in the OR while he was asleep. She obtained the lab tubes and walked them down to the OR herself. It was clear to us that Pema was doing everything in her power to make [patient] better. As we sat impatient and worried, she kept fighting for us. She worked diligently at his bedside. She called to get extra pain medication for him to put through his IV. She got him extra blankets. She kept us in the loop the second she knew anything. I am aware that [patient] was not her only patient, but she sure made us feel that way. She cared for [patient] like he was her own son. She cared for our family like we were hers. She hugged me, cried with me, and after the surgery...she smiled with me. Pema is everything it means to be a pediatric nurse. [Patient] (7 years old) was looking for Pema each morning...wondering, "Will Pema be my nurse?" When I read through the criteria for this award, Pema exceeds every single one. I hope that your committee will choose her for this amazing award!! We are forever changed because of her care!!
