My child, [patient], was diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer on New Year's Eve 2020 and is still needing treatment today after a relapse. [Patient] was only 9 months old. The nurse's name is Cassondra Markley. That night would change our lives forever. Cassondra became [patient]’s best friend and guardian angel. She noticed the signs of being septic in [patient]. Cassondra told the doctor. She was right, bile was leaking into her stomach from her liver. [Dad] and [mom] were scared. Cassondra was calm and was walking us through what was going on. [Patient] was in an urgent situation and we went back to the PICU. She needed oxygen and surgery to fix it. Without the fast actions of Cassondra, she would have died. She saved my daughter's life. The day [patient] was transferred back on the floor she was our nurse again. We were very pleased, to say the least. Cassondra worked with us night and day to help [patient]. In total, we spent over 3 1/2 months in the Hospital. This amazing nurse taught us how to work with our daughter and on top of it how to advocate for her. [Patient] was so scared then Cassondra would work into the room and she would smile instantaneously and hide. The reason [patient] would hide is they used to scare each other for fun, play peekaboo, dance, and cars. But [patient]’s favorite thing was just seeing Cassondra. Then on another night when [patient] needed another surgery, we found out she was allergic to CHG that was in her central line. This made [patient]’s neck turn into hamburger meat. Again, she caught it and called all the proper people to get it fixed. This nurse is unstoppable. Now, [patient] is 2 years old and she did her last round of chemo. [Dad] and I almost can be nurses thanks to her. Our family would not be where we are if it wasn’t for her. Cassondra is the most outstanding nurse I have ever worked with, but in reality, she is the most outstanding, kind, strong advocate, great communicator, and the most amazing person my family has ever met.
