Amanda was doing her routine work of calling patients who have been discharged from the hospital to assess how the patients are doing. When speaking with this patient, she realized that they may have a significant diagnosis and needed an MRI of the brain and a PET scan but there were no orders and it had not been set up for the patient. The patient told her that he did not have any follow-up plans.
Amanda investigated and then discussed with the primary provider and obtained the needed orders so she could work on getting the patient the needed appointments. Since she was unsure of the prognosis, she wanted to get this complete as soon as possible. She spent a good part of the day arranging and coordinating the patient's care so that he would get his needed tests the next morning in Rochester along with a follow-up appointment with oncology. She truly went out of her way to help this patient.
On another occasion, she assisted a mother whose child was ill. The mother called the triage line and they told her she needed to have the child seen. There were no appointments available except for a virtual appointment, so she discussed the child's health with the provider who wanted her child to have Covid/RST testing. The mother called and spoke with Amanda because she wanted to get these tests done at our site. Amanda assessed the child and felt the child needed to see a provider.
The mother was very upset with Amanda for wanting the mother to bring the child in for another appointment. Amanda calmly explained that she was only interested in the child. The mother agreed and Amanda met the mother at the door. She had the rooming nurse ready to room the child, and they completed the needed swabbing before the provider came in to see the child. The provider felt the child needed to be taken to the ER due to severe dehydration. The child was admitted and spent the night in the hospital.
The mother called Amanda the next day and Amanda arranged for the child to be seen that same day for follow-up. The mother was so grateful to Amanda for stepping in to care for the child. Every day, Amanda goes above and beyond for the care of our patients. She is dedicated and promotes health and well-being of coworkers, colleagues, and patients.
