The Medical ICU Pod 1 had two patients from Saginaw (more than 100 miles north of Detroit) that were here for an extended period of time. The families were traveling back and forth daily to be at the bedside of their loved ones who were in critical care, fighting to stay alive. The MICU team had developed a special bond with these families and was concerned with how much money they were spending on gas, as the price of gas was getting closer and closer to $5.00/gallon. Clinical nurse, Hillary Licata, BSN, RN, approached management with the desire to help these families out. With the assistance of Care Experience, the team was able to donate gas cards to the families to help with the daily commute. These gas cards were greatly appreciated, but the team didn’t stop there. They wanted to do more. Together, Hillary and clinical nurse Chris Campeau, BSN, RN, CCRN, spearheaded a collection to raise money for the families to help lessen the financial strain. The team had grown close to these patients and their families, and this was their way of giving back to them, to help them out in a difficult time, and to show their genuine concern and support. Everyone on the team was extremely generous with donations. So much more than anticipated. Together they raised over $800 and presented it to the families who both broke down in tears with heartfelt appreciation. They are wonderful caregivers whose compassion and empathy drive such selfless acts of kindness. They look for opportunities to help ease the burden patients and families suffer while being hospitalized. They go above and beyond and are always asking what else can be done, how can we help.
