Samjana took her break time, out of a very busy day in her unit to assist a family in need.
A pregnant patient delivered her baby at 34 weeks gestation at home. The new mom and her baby were transported to Mercy Fairfield by ambulance where they were admitted. Both parents spoke Nepali. Since the baby was early, he was admitted to the Special Care Nursery. An initial assessment of the newborn revealed that he had many characteristics of Down’s Syndrome. The parents were very concerned and stated that Down’s Syndrome is very rare in their native country. They also stated that “we have never seen someone with Down’s Syndrome”.

Despite the best efforts of the team caring for the infant to reassure the patients, they we very anxious and worried. They were concerned about how their baby would grow and develop and they asked, “Were they capable of caring for a special needs child?" Samjana Baral, a nurse from another unit heard about this family and offered to speak with them during her break. Samjana was able to speak with the family in their native language, as a nursing professional. She spoke with them about Down’s Syndrome, and what it meant for their baby, and reassured the parents that they were very capable of caring for their infant and his special needs.

Samjana was able to provide the family with the support and comfort they needed, that, even with the assistance of qualified interpreters, the care team was not able to provide. Samjana took her break time, out of a very busy day in her unit to assist a family in need. Samajana embodied the Values of not only being a nurse but the Values of being a Mercy employee. She provided this family with Dignity by speaking to them in their native language as a nurse, she demonstrated Integrity. As an RN, Samjana was someone whom the family could trust. Samjana clearly showed compassion. She heard of this family’s distress and offered to assist without hesitation. Her Stewardship was evident in the way the family responded to Samjana and the visible signs of decreased anxiety. Samjana’s unselfish act of taking time out of her busy day to assist this family demonstrated Service.
