When David moved to Cardiac Rehab, that disarming charm and boisterous sense of welcoming was a perfect fit.
David Hoffman is somewhat of an unsung DAISY. For years he served in the ED and was always the patient champion and ED ambassador to the patients and families who were there on less-than-stellar days. His friendly demeanor and ability to put patients and families at ease were a constant. His sense of humor with them also helped to diffuse the anxiety that came with a trip to the ED.

When David moved to Cardiac Rehab, that disarming charm and boisterous sense of welcoming was a perfect fit. He has the ability to zero in on a patient’s strength and helps them to use that to their advantage in the healing process. He also has the innate sense when something isn’t quite right and becomes a wise advisor and teacher to help the patient through the rough spot.

Recently I had a phone call from David asking if I could meet with a Rehab patient who was truly struggling with his diagnosis and inability to ‘be himself’. He had talked with David and shared his struggles in trying to ‘see his way through’ his new diagnosis. The patient had had several recent health issues and was at his low point. He was questioning not only his health but his sense of self-worth and his faith. David picked up on that and treated the whole patient, body, mind, and spirit, getting him connected with resources to help him heal.

In meeting with the patient, he shared with me that “if it weren’t for David’s concern and compassion, he would have given up and dropped out of Cardiac Rehab and become a slug”. Because of David, the patient was able to talk about what was happening with him and discover internal resources he had forgotten he had. He also renewed his commitment to work towards healing.

Nurse Hoffman, thank you for being that special kind of nurse who goes beyond the physical and cares for the spirit. You make a difference one person at a time.
