My dad has a history of having a traumatic brain injury from a hit-and-run car accident years ago while he was exercising on a bicycle. It left him with poor balance, vision impairments, and cognitive problems. A couple of days before Christmas 2021, he had a terrible fall and broke his neck. It was unexpected and we ended up having to spend Christmas Day admitted for a cervical C5 and C6 fracture. It was stressful and scary to have a family member admitted during the pandemic and during the holidays. We had Nurse Ivy for three nights in a row. We felt extremely fortunate because she was bilingual, spoke Mandarin, and was able to help reassure my mom that my dad was going to be well taken care of. She helped my dad through her meticulous nursing care and shared her positive experiences with patients who had similar injuries. Nurse Ivy was caring and showed her dedication to her patients by going the extra mile. One example of her extra care was that my dad had been wearing a C-spine collar on his neck and she noticed that his back was getting red when he got up to use the restroom. She placed a dressing to help prevent skin breakdown and fixed the collar every time she noticed it was off. She educated us about his c spine collar and how to adjust it. Ivy also helped my dad with the small things like bathing and getting clean because noticed that he had not had a bath for a couple of days. Sometimes, it’s simple things that patients need help with that are easy to overlook. My dad and mom felt so much better after she helped him clean up. She would always check in to make sure he was okay and used many moments as teaching opportunities. Ivy reviewed and educated on all his medications every time, even if it was a repeated medication for the day before. Upon discharge, we were really touched when she wrote of quick note to my dad. It was in Mandarin, a language he could read since he has hearing loss. In the letter, she wished him well and encouraged him to get better. She cared for him during his stay, but she also cared that he continued to get better at home. My dad has memory loss but every once in a while, he sees the note and remembers the “kind nurse who wrote him a letter.” Nurse Ivy helped make my dad’s hospitalization more comfortable and helped ease a lot of anxiety for us, knowing he was in good hands. Having neurosurgery during the holidays was stressful but having great nurses made it a little easier. Thanks, Ivy, you made such a difference to our stay.
