We will forever be grateful to Elton for the care and compassion he showed my son in his final days.
My 15-year-old son A. lost his battle with a brain tumor just a short 6 weeks after the battle began. We were in his third and final hospitalization when we met Elton Lavin. Elton was my son's night nurse for the last two days of his life. From the moment Elton walked into the room I felt a sense of calmness. Elton spoke to my son with care and concern but not too much which might make a 15-year-old uncomfortable. My son was immobile by the time Elton came into his life. Elton knew how to position my son's body without hurting him. He was cautious not to cause any more discomfort and treated my son with dignity. He worked quickly quietly and efficiently with the least amount of disruption to A's sleep. I realized very soon that A. felt comfortable with Elton not only because of how he cared for him but also because they were so similar. My son had long hair that was tied in a bun so does Elton. My son was tall and skinny so is Elton. My son had a quiet and helpful demeanor and so does Elton. I think A. connected so much with Elton because he saw himself in him. Elton was the last person my son was able to communicate with before he passed. Elton came into his room at the start of his shift and asked him how he was doing. My son gave him a quick thumbs up. That was the last communication he had with anyone. My son started to transition that night. Elton was with us through the most difficult scary and traumatic parts of this journey; all the while comforting my son speaking calmly and reassuringly. He kept us all as level-headed as we could possibly be in a time of chaos. We will forever be grateful to Elton for the care and compassion he showed my son in his final days. Elton is deserving of this DAISY Award to honor his work and to show our appreciation for him. He had a positive impact on my son, and we will forever be indebted to him for the dignified way he treated A. and for his kindness and care.
