Her encouragement, kindness, and expertise brought our family so much joy.
I had Betsi as a nurse during the birth of our daughter, and I believe her repositioning efforts ultimately helped me achieve the VBAC I dreamed of. My labor had stalled, and my contractions were not effective for many hours. We faced the decision to pursue a repeat cesarean, something that made me very emotional. I had stopped dilating at 5cm over the course of 6 hours. Betsi had the idea to try various repositioning efforts with the help of her orientee to see if we could get me to dilate further. We had discussed reassessing after an hour and a half of these efforts. The doctor felt it was a 50/50 shot, and we were starting to feel defeated. But in those repositioning maneuvers, I started to feel pressure! I sensed they were working. Even if we just got a couple of centimeters, we would have all been happy. When the time came to recheck my cervix, we held our breath. I knew this was a deciding moment between a repeat cesarean and the VBAC I wanted so badly. To everyone’s shock, those repositioning efforts dilated me to complete! 10cm and ready to push! We all cheered and celebrated, and our daughter was born 40 minutes later. I’ll never forget, after we made the decision to try the repositioning, I asked Betsi what she would have done. She smiled and said, “I was hoping you’d go for it.” Her encouragement, kindness, and expertise brought our family so much joy. And ultimately, achieving the VBAC was healing. I’ve been going through postpartum on cloud 9 having had a beautiful and happy birth experience thanks to the team at M Health Fairview. Nurses like Betsi demonstrate what it means to be passionate about patient care and I’m so grateful to have had her as our nurse for the birth of our daughter.
