Leonela’s patient had a birthday while in the hospital while he was waiting for a heart transplant. She ordered him a birthday cake that was delivered to the unit. She also got him a balloon which she fastened to the cake. She gathered available staff on the unit to surprise the patient. We all went into the patient's room to present the cake and sing him "happy birthday". Leonela knew the patient wasn't particularly fond of cake, so she brought him his favorite flavor of sorbet ice cream as well. The patient was surprised and extremely moved because he had no visitors at his bedside at this time. Leonela has taken a lot of time to care for this patient and make him feel like he's part of our unit's family. He has been on our unit for >4 weeks and we have all gotten to know him well. She made sure on his birthday he felt extra special.
