I cried on her shoulder for what seemed like an eternity. I will never forget those moments of kindness and compassion for as long as I live.
Stephanie Labat took care of my very best friend, G (and one of Ochsner's own RNs for over 7 years) on NPU in October 2022. From the moment she walked in the room that first morning, she was nothing but kind, attentive, compassionate, and caring to not just G, but to her whole family. Although she was only her nurse for the first day, you would have never known, because she was in there helping out/giving meds, and checking on everyone when she wasn't even assigned to be G's nurse on the second day. When we got the news that G's cancer had spread to her brain and spinal fluid, I walked out of the room to give her family time with her, and I started balling. Stephanie was right there and asked if I needed a hug. I said "no" and stepped into the stairwell. Not more than 5 seconds later, she came into that stairwell and said, "I can't take no for an answer" and just held me while I cried on her shoulder for what seemed like an eternity. I will never forget those moments of kindness and compassion for as long as I live. She could tell what I needed at that moment when I was unable to, and it was a hug and embrace that meant more than I can put into words. When G had a seizure towards the end of the shift, Stephanie was right there, remained calm while she got her vitals, assessed her, and called the doctors who came up to the room within 5 minutes of her call. Her presence always put us at ease as she quickly worked to get her stable.
