While talking about hobbies, Neal learned that I am a sailor, and began to tap into the vocabulary of the sea to tailor our communication to my needs.
On the day I was admitted to the Partial Hospitalization Program, I was a nervous wreck. I was there for depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, though at the root of my issues was a belief that I am a waste of space. It was very hard for me to accept care when I felt that way.

Enter Neal.

He spoke to me softly and gave me clear instructions so I did not feel lost. When he asked about my history of trauma, my support system, and others, he approached the topics with a perfect mixture of tender kindness and firm guidance. While talking about hobbies, he learned that I am a sailor, and began to tap into the vocabulary of the sea to tailor our communication to my needs. He saw me answer questions in an analytical manner and offered me advice about how to approach the program. "Let the information come to you like the wind off the lake." To just take it in. It was exactly the guidance I needed.

Finally, he offered me a simple ritual. A daily practice for self-compassion. Something he had shared with many others along his journey. Every morning now, I look in the mirror, place my fist on my heart, and say "I am somebody too."
