Kyle made him feel comfortable in asking for help and my dad got the much-needed rest knowing Kyle was his nurse.
In November, my dad was brought to RI Hospital. He received excellent care from the time EMS picked him up, through the ED, and then on Main 6. Everyone was caring and knowledgeable throughout his stay; however, it was Kyle who provided a sense of comfort which is exactly what my dad needed.
My dad needed care he would have never expected to need. Six months prior, he was walking miles a day, talking to neighbors and friends, completely independent. Unfortunately, a new, terminal cancer diagnosis changed that quickly. My very modest, strong, veteran dad relied on help from the nurses and aids for everyday care. This was extremely difficult for him both physically and perhaps even more mentally.
One morning, I spoke to my dad and asked him how he was feeling. He told me about his amazing night nurse, Kyle. Kyle made him feel comfortable in asking for help and my dad got the much-needed rest knowing Kyle was his nurse.
Later that evening, on the day of my parents' 43rd wedding anniversary, Kyle came in the room at 3 pm to tell my dad, he would be his nurse. As my mom put it "I think dad was happier to see Kyle than me!" :) We were able to leave the hospital knowing Kyle and the team would take great care of him. We all slept well that night - thanks to Kyle.
I am not sure what Kyle said and/or did to give my dad the ease to ask and accept help. This is what makes him extraordinary. While this may have just been another day (or double) for Kyle, he made such an impact in caring for my dad and family knowing he was his nurse. I wholeheartedly believe Kyle is deserving of this award.
