While providing care for this new family, Laurie went beyond to nurture and support my son, who was not her patient.
Recently my son and his girlfriend welcomed their first child, a baby girl, at Huguley. On the same day, my son received tragic news as his father died unexpectedly. This unfortunate news clouded what should have been the most joyous time in his life. While providing care for this new family, Laurie went beyond to nurture and support my son, who was not her patient.
As a mother, all I wanted to do was take his pain away and wrap my arms around him. However, my arms were not big enough to shield him from the news or soothe the pain. Laurie stepped up to the plate to not only care for her patients, but she offered a second set of arms to embrace my son. Her presence, prayers, and words were above what is typically expected in this clinical setting. She helped us get through such a difficult day. She provided physical touch, food, and time. She helped me hold myself together so I could be there for my son. She helped me give him the strength and love he needed to get through that tough news while still learning a new role as a father who is supporting his partner. She went beyond for my family.
As a team member, I have seen her care in this way many times for other people. She always amazes me. She lives the mission of the hospital and her truth for me and my family. Our hospital and our team have a true angel with a giant heart living in this nurse.
Additionally, she knew this new family could use some help, so she cleared out baby supplies she no longer needed for her grandbabies and gave them to my son. I have often seen her use her own money and resources to get things for patients from the cafeteria or Bistro. She always cares for her patients like those she loves the most making them feel secure and loved.
