Diana stayed at his side with the physicians and comforted the veteran while holding his hand; telling him that he was not alone, she was with him, and that his family loved him and were on their way.
The MICU had recently admitted a veteran who was critically ill. His family had gone home for the night and he rapidly started decompensating. The nurse, Diana, was quick to act and called the team to the veteran's bedside to advocate for and begin resuscitation efforts. He was a DNR/DNI, and it became clear that no matter what efforts were made, he was going to pass soon. Diana stayed at his side with the physicians and comforted the veteran while holding his hand; telling him that he was not alone, she was with him, and that his family loved him and were on their way. She stayed with him until he died, and then spent time with his family once they arrived. Diana showcased all of the I-CARE principles with this veteran -integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect and excellence. She is a gem to have in the MICU and always provides excellent care to her patients, and we very much appreciate her dedication and kindness.
