“I am Professional” How has the nominee created innovative environments for the achievement of exceptional outcomes while advancing and contributing to the profession?

During the night shift, Patrick is a resource for the ministry.  He is very knowledgeable and approachable and welcomes brainstorming from any staff member. As an ICU RN, he is a lead member in all medical emergencies.  Patrick floats to other departments without hesitation to assist with staffing challenges. Patrick also completes his educational requirements on time, without prompting.

“I am an Advocate” How has this nominee supported other nurses throughout their nursing career?

Patrick has mentored nearly all of the ICU staff at St. Mary’s Janesville. When the newer nurses are intimidated about calling the provider to update them on the patient’s condition, Patrick mentors the orientees and is right by their side to make the call.

“I am a Partner” How has this nominee partnered with patients, families, customers, and colleagues to provide exceptional care and service throughout their careers?

Patrick is precise in the care that he provides to patients.  Patrick supports the patients' families and is passionate about patient satisfaction. Patrick does a great job putting large medical words into layman’s terms for patients and families to understand. Patrick is excellent at taking the time to have the 80-second, many times much longer, conversation with patients. Patrick has adapted to asking patients “Is there anything else I can do for you?” before leaving the patient’s room.

“I am Accountable” How has this nominee taken accountability for achieving outcomes? Please provide specific examples when possible.

Patrick is engaged in the ICU’s performance board. He assists with the goal decision-making process and has a shared mental model of what ICU processes need improvement to ensure exceptional care is being provided to patients. Patrick’s dedication is evident by our ministry’s zero CAUTI & CLABSI rate for 2 years and counting.

“I am Leader” How has this nominee implemented our Mission within their team, their department, their ministry, and the community?

Patrick is a leader at the bedside. He has been instrumental in sharing his knowledge by orienting new ICU nurses. With his numerous years of ICU experience, he is also able to guide and be a mentor for all nurses, and providers, within the ministry. Patrick has a calm demeanor when orientating and urges his orientees to use their own critical thinking skills to problem-solve at the bedside.

Patrick is very deserving of the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award. Patrick originally started his career with SSM at St. Mary’s Madison. He then transitioned to St. Mary’s Janesville, retired, and was simply unfulfilled with fishing and hunting once the Wisconsin winter set in and he began to feel the nursing itch. Therefore, came out of retirement and returned to SSM St. Mary’s Janesville as a night ICU RN.

Patrick is an asset to our ministry as he is a wealth of knowledge with many years of ICU clinical practice. Patrick shares his vast knowledge by mentoring any nurse, provider, or ancillary staff that he connects with. Patrick connects with patients and families on a personal human level. He is not afraid to advocate for patients or staff. Patrick escalates valid concerns, often with solutions in mind. Patrick has touched so many lives throughout his nursing career and has a humble way of simply being.
