After four rounds of intense nonstop CPR the little girl took a breath. Lindsey didn’t stop and eventually, the ambulance came. Lindsey saved this little girl's life without hesitation.
I am nominating Lindsey Cummins for the DAISY Award for her heroic deed that took place while we were on a girls' trip in Hawaii. Lindsey is a charge nurse on the neonatal unit at CHOC. She has worked as a nurse there for approximately 20 years. She is passionate about nursing. While Lindsey, myself, and 4 other friends were in Hawaii celebrating our 40th birthdays Lindsey saved a little girl's life from a drowning incident.
It was an ordinary day at the lagoon. This is a giant pool that’s made to look like the ocean. It is full of salt water and fish but it is man-made. As we were all leaving our spot on the sand we heard tons of commotion, blood-curdling screams of sheer panic. Our friend yelled, “RUN LINDSEY!” Lindsey dropped everything. Her hat, beach bag, took off her shoes without skipping a beat, and ran to the crowd of people as fast as she could. When she got there, a little 5 year old girl lay lifeless. No pulse, she was grey with clenched fists and her entire body was cold. She had drowned. Lindsey began CPR immediately. Lindsey did the chest compressions and another medical professional jumped in to help with the breathing. After four rounds of intense nonstop CPR the little girl took a breath. Lindsey didn’t stop and eventually, the ambulance came. Lindsey saved this little girl's life without hesitation. Lindsey walked away, put her hat back on and we all just prayed she’d be ok. Lindsey doesn’t want any recognition or applause for this heroic act but she needs to be recognized. She needs to know that her quick thinking and passion for helping children saved a life. Our ordinary girls' trip turned quite scary within one moment but the outcome would’ve been terribly different if it weren’t for Lindsey reviving her. She is an Extraordinary Nurse at work in the NICU but also in her everyday life-saving lives on vacation in Hawaii. Lindsey has a Healer’s Touch and is a true hero.
**Lindsey got a call today from the mother of the little girl. She is alive and doing well. The mother found Lindsey to thank her for saving her daughter's life.
