This was so comforting and positive, to have somebody sit and chat with me after previous experience and fear going into the operation.
I was admitted to the LGI following a lucky discovery of my condition following a Biobank volunteer session. My first surgery to repair my aortic valve and root aneurysm failed as the surgical team was unable to connect me to bypass. I had my second operation which was this time successful. To further evidence how Becky supported me, my state of mind prior to the second operation was simple, I did not think I would survive. I had written a letter to my family for reading in the event of my death. On waking in ICU after my second operation Becky was at my bedside my first question to her was had the operation been done this time. Becky was fully aware of my previous issues and with understanding explained this time the operation had been successful and reassuringly explained to me what had been and the success achieved. This was so comforting and positive, to have somebody sit and chat with me after previous experience and fear going into the operation. Whilst Becky was not at my bedside all day, she regularly came to check on me which was very comforting and reassuring, helping to ease my anxiety. I had several mood swings in the first few hours after waking, from high anxiety to elation. Becky bought into all my mood changes providing support and understanding. During this time, I remember I became a little sarcastic poking fun at Becky, it was my pathway of releasing my own anxiety. Again, Becky understood my mood and reasons accepting my comments and returning my sarcasm, which was exactly the “banter” needed to relieve my anxiety and fear. When my family arrived, Becky sat with me and them answering their questions and concerns. Quite simply Becky was outstanding, her care, compassion, and understanding, given to me during the early hours in ICU helped me develop a positive attitude to my experience and enabled me to come out of my anxiety/depression.
