There is no doubt in my mind that Sally saved this man’s life. She did not back down. She kept fighting for him when he could not fight for himself.
I would like to add that Sally was the BEST advocate for this patient. For days, the patient had been here, continuously growing sicker. Despite all that was being done for him, he showed NO improvement. Sally had spoken with the physician regarding bowel obstruction and was hushed, but she didn’t back down. Finally a test was ordered to see if his stomach was emptying properly. Sally clamped his tube. It was clamped for about 6 hours and when she unclamped it, 2 liters of fluid emptied via the tube. This is abnormal. Sally immediately contacted the surgeon, who did not want to do anything. Sally refused to back down, because she knew this man needed someone to help him. After much assertive conversation with the surgeon, he relented and took the patient to the OR. The man had a DEAD BOWEL. It was repaired and this gentleman recovered quickly, moved out of CCU, and went home soon thereafter. There is no doubt in my mind that Sally saved this man’s life. She did not back down. She kept fighting for him when he could not fight for himself. We could not be more blessed to have her on our team and involved in the care of our patients.
