He showed leadership as a manager and as a nurse, advocated hard for the care this patient needed, when he had to fight against authorities.
Ben came on the unit and immediately was hands-on helping as 3 moms were unstable (2 were hypotensive and not responsive). Ben advocated for one of the moms since only the resident came up to see the patient. The patient needed urgent care that the provider was not providing. Ben brought the patient down to urge the provider to see the patient and intervene as she was still not very responsive. After surgery, Ben advocated for this patient to go to the ICU for closer monitoring as the provider and LDR manager believed this patient was stable to stay in our facility after losing additional 2.5 liters of blood and had received all blood product treatment possible. This patient is alive with her new family thanks to Ben’s advocating for more intensive care and treatment and able to communicate to providers to intervene for patient safety as all the nurses knew clinically this patient needed immediate critical care. Ben is a manager, but still a nurse and deserves recognition for advocating for this patient. He showed leadership as a manager and as a nurse, advocated hard for the care this patient needed, when he had to fight against authorities. We are so glad Ben was there at the right time because without him. This patient would not be here anymore.

There were 3 patients that required extra observation. One of those patients began to decompensate rather quickly and needed immediate life-saving intervention. At that moment, our fully staffed unit divided to provider appropriate care to our patients. Upon his arrival to the unit, Ben was informed of the situation and before sitting down or walking into his office he headed directly to the patient’s room. It was his leadership and communication that expedited her trip back to the OR in turn allowing the surgical team to stop her hemorrhage. Ben remained calm and steadfast in advocating for this patient. It is often taken for granted that a manager should “take charge”. Ben not only stepped up to the challenge, he went above and beyond and this is why I feel he is deserving of this award.

Ben always steps up for his staff. He is polite, hardworking, treated everyone with respect, and approaches everyone in a very professional manner. Always encourages us to do our best and is very helpful in doing so too.
