I was fairly afraid. Bailey said, "I know this is a first for you, but it's not a first for us. We have all done this before. So be as afraid as you need to be because we aren't afraid and we've got you.“
I came into the hospital overdue and my baby wasn't moving. The on-call Doctor decided to start induction. Bailey was just coming on duty as they were starting the Pitocin. She was friendly and helpful. We connected on the topic of Bluey because my kids (as well as my husband and I) love Bluey, and she has a younger sibling who loves it too.
As induction began to pick up, my baby's heart rate was decelerating with every contraction. Bailey was still giving me hope for a vaginal delivery but was preparing me for the possibility of a C-section. When it was decided that I would get a C-section I became visibly nervous. Bailey prepared my husband mentally for the operating room. He doesn't handle blood well, but she assured him that it would be just fine. He'd have a chair by my head and not see a single thing.
After mentally preparing my husband, she shifted to me. The part I will never forget is what she said to me. This was my first C-section and I didn't know what to expect. I was fairly afraid. Bailey said, "I know this is a first for you, but it's not a first for us. We have all done this before. So be as afraid as you need to be because we aren't afraid and we've got you.“ In the operating room, she held my hand while they did my spinal and quoted a specific line from an episode of Bluey, "You're doing great." (If you know Bluey, you know why that insignificant phrase is significant to this moment). She had control of that OR. She got everyone's attention for a Time Out on two different occasions. She was comforting to my husband and I. And after surgery, she was so attentive in recovery. She professionally, but also compassionately, took care of making sure everything was wrapped up. My baby was born safe and healthy and she made it so by making sure I was comfortable in a scary unplanned situation. Thank you, Bailey.
