Jakie's compassionate care, problem solving, and positive attitude keeps our patients and nurses safe.

Saving lives and providing critical care is a routine activity in MICU which require patience, critical thinking, and effective communication in a timely manner to provide excellent care.

Jakie Faruq is one of the best nurses in MICU who exhibits all the criteria of a DAISY Nurse. His compassionate care, problem solving, and positive attitude keeps our patients and nurses safe. March 30th, Jakie was on the floor as a charge nurse. He was extensively helping all nurses when the floor was extremely busy with multiple unstable admissions. For instance, he was helping a nurse, who had a hemodynamically unstable young patient, and was going through in hemorrhagic shock at that moment. Jakie performed his excellence in leadership during the critical situation of the patient. In one hand he communicated with doctors and blood bank and on another hand, he was performing rapid blood transfusion with a calm manner. He was guiding the nurses and attending doctors according to hospital protocol. Jakie's critical thinking, guidance, and leadership helped to save the young life.

At the end of Feb, Jakie received a critically ill patient, who was in an isolation room for TB roll out. For the safety of his patients and co-workers, Jakie was very careful to maintain strict isolation. He educated the patient’s family members about the significance of TB isolation. On the other hand, he took the patient for CT/MRI maintaining proper safety for all so that he would not delay patient care. His safety approaches were remarkable and exemplary for all.

Not only for his patients, but Jakie is also very thoughtful for the floor, especially when he takes supplies for patients. He makes sure that nurses can apply the best uses of supplies with minimal waste. He is not only a compassionate nurse, but also a great resource for the doctors and nurses.

Being an advocate for patients and their family is one of the remarkable virtues of Jakie. Jakie sets the best example of being an advocate for a patient, when he found that one of the nurses on the floor struggling with intubating a patient resulting in an improperly sedated patient. That patient failed the trial for extubation, and the medical team was reluctant to give a sedation order. As a result, the patient was spontaneously waking up and tried multiple times to pull out the medical devices. Jakie brought the whole medical team to the bedside and was able to convince the team to administer proper sedation to reduce the patient’s suffering. He also exhibits proper sympathy to the family as well as using holistic patient care.

In conclusion, Jakie is an example in how to be a human before being a nurse. “Excellence in Care” is an inevitable part of him, and he demonstrates this in his day-to-day work. He carries the core value and vision of the hospital. I feel very happy, safe, and supported working with Jakie.
