Shannon was not only the patient’s confidante but also showed empathy and was an active listener.
Nurses are caring and compassionate individuals. They go the extra mile and live the “we care” behaviors through their daily actions. They strive for the best life for their patients. Shannon Sullivan is being recognized for doing just that. This story was shared by a teammate who works alongside Shannon at the dialysis facility.
Affinity Place had a patient who started in the center, then went to PD, but ended up back in the center. She was very young. The patient trusted this nurse and felt supported. Shannon was not only the patient’s confidante but also showed empathy and was an active listener. She worked diligently to encourage the patient to work toward a transplant. Shannon helped the patient stay on track to get through the transplant workup and ultimately get a kidney transplant. She was able to resume the activities in her life that she did prior to her kidney failure diagnosis.
After a successful transplant, the patient came back into the unit to show appreciation and bring flowers to her for her dedication and commitment to not only her life but to all the patients this nurse cared for. This is just one of many stories where Shannon Sullivan has done amazing work and shown compassion for her patients. We are pleased to honor Shannon Sullivan today with one of the highest awards in nursing - The DAISY Award.
