Kelsey is the primary nurse for a patient with Leukemia, this patient’s next treatment was filled with worry and frustration for the patient’s mother. The patient had tested positive for COVID and further delay of her treatment was not in the patient’s best interest. The mother was very fearful of having her daughter on the COVID unit when her daughter's immune system was already very fragile. Further concerning for the mom was that her daughter may not have her usual team of nurses whom the patient had connected to and that she and the family came to rely on to get them through this difficult diagnosis. Kelsey as one of this patient’s primary inpatient oncology nurses stepped up to ensure that the patient and family has some sense of security while being off their home unit. Kelsey volunteered to float to the COVID unit on all her scheduled shifts to personally care for this patient and their family. While floating to another unit isn't always the popular choice, Kelsey saw past her own feelings and made the decision to do what was right for the patient. This act of selflessness on Kelsey's part went a long way in giving the patient and mother a measure of stability in an otherwise stressful time.
