My daughter was in for a baclofen trial and pump placement over the course of a week or so. Friday, pump placement day came along and went without a hitch. That night my daughter became hard to arouse, actually not at all. Stats were stable thankfully, but she was not responding to neuro checks, stimulation, voice, or anything for that matter. I, myself, didn't think anything of it at first because her stats were stable, it was after midnight, and she was sleeping soundly. It wasn't until Preston came in to do a neuro check that he discovered my daughter was not responding and we needed to let her surgeon know. Never once did Preston lose his cool, composure, or professionalism. He made sure I was aware of everything he was doing, gave updates from staff as soon as he knew, and even made sure I personally was okay! He asked if I had eaten, drank anything, needed to sit down, and assured me this "was his job". Naturally, at this point I'm very uneasy and scared as I watched my child lay there essentially "lifeless". Fear and the overwhelming sense of life overcame me and I was soooo nervous. He never left our side for very long, was always trying different things, and going over possible complications/interactions/scenarios to cause this. He and his charge nurse were diligent, always professional, and compassionate. In a time like that, I'll never forget the level of care that I felt coming from both of them. Soon enough our surgeon came, addressed my concerns, and assured me the next and upcoming steps. Never once did I feel that the situation wasn't controlled or felt like my child wasn't a priority. I couldn't be more thankful for my daughter’s nursing staff, physicians, or supporting staff. In a scary situation, it's comforting to know someone has your back and honestly cares. Thanks again Dell Children’s for making me feel safe in my decision for my daughter’s care! To Preston, please know how much you are appreciated and the love you have for your job and these kiddos are priceless. Moms like me will forever be grateful for nurses like YOU!
