This nurse leader has always been super helpful whenever the staff has questions. This nurse leader is enthusiastic about educating the staff, they go out of their way to ensure that we thoroughly understand policies/changes, and they maintain a personable attitude with a professional demeanor. Recently, I was able to witness this nurse leader as they shared their knowledge, patience, and compassion with a patient threatening to leave against medical advice. The patient in question was admitted and was being treated for TB. There had been some fallouts in communication from the entire interdisciplinary team, which led to the patient’s distrust and fear of continuing treatment with Inspira. It took extensive effort on the part of myself, the doctor, and this leader, to iron out these miscommunications and provide some service recovery. This nurse leader, however, was the “ray of sunshine” per the family's definition. This nurse leader sat with the patient, explained TB to the patient in a way that they could understand, went through the diagnostic process, thoroughly, and answered any questions the family had. We spent over an hour with the patient and his family. In that hour, the patient went from being very upset and borderline, hostile, to laughing and joking about his lifestyle and personal experiences. This nurse leader even shared with him a personal experience they had with their son to further convey to the patient that they understood his frustration and could appreciate how things seem to unfold from his perspective. This nurse leader also made sure to reassure the patient that he is in great hands at Inspira as they talked up their colleagues. This nurse leader is truly the definition of an exceptional nurse leader!
