I’d been in the hospital for several days and was tense, apprehensive, and very concerned because of the life-changing potential of my injury. I was very sleep deprived. The injury was part of the confluence of two rivers of human misery; the other was the loss of a great longtime friend to cancer. Into this duality came a true angel of mercy. Her name was Jennifer. She’s a night nurse at Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital. Her God-given gift is an inner core of quiet strong confidence, combined with the ability to use her gift to minister to those of us at low points in our lives. She helps restore a measure of calm and balance to those in her care. It’s partly professional knowledge, of course, but goes far beyond that. She projects and imparts some of her own inner peace and calm to the worried and sad hearts of those in need. Her calm voice, quiet control of situations, and deep abiding calmness in the facing of our fear all are balm to the souls of those of us lucky enough to be in her care. This reassurance can help turn the tide of our fears and is gratefully received! A measure of peace and the beginning of more tranquil acceptance is her treasured gift to us. I personally have thanked God for her appearing at the most difficult point in my long life.
