Jennifer decided to negotiate with the patient, if Jennifer could attest to her cat’s health and safety, the patient will admit herself to detox.
Jennifer had a patient that needed to go to rehab, however when she started preparing for shift change to have the patient sign paperwork for transfer, she was surprised. When asked patient to sign, she refused. The patient was asked why she didn’t want to go, she stated she was worried that Mr. F, her cat, was alone with no food or water. Jennifer realized the only barrier to the appropriate treatment for her patient was Mr. F. She asked if there were any friends or family that could check on her cat and she didn’t have anyone. Jennifer decided to negotiate with the patient, if Jennifer could attest to her cat’s health and safety, the patient will admit herself to detox. She gave the code to her building and left a single key under the mat to the front door. To Jennifer’s astonishment, there was Mr. F casually laying on the couch with not a care in the world. His bowl was overflowing with food and water was topped off. Jennifer took pictures of Mr. F and sent them to the nurse managing the patient’s case. As a result, the patient immediately signed the transfer, voiced her relief, and was calmly transferred for detox. Jennifer went above and beyond to ensure the patient felt safe and her cat was taken care of so the patient could get the help she needed.
