My husband and I experienced the hardest day of our lives when we lost our baby boy at 21 weeks. As heartbreaking and life changing as our loss is, the care we received in Lutheran General Hospital will always have a special place in my heart thanks to Laurie Bakken RN.
We fondly remember her when she would always politely announce herself before walking into our room with a kind voice saying “It’s Laurie.” Laurie was so kind and gentle with a sweet, soft demeanor about her. She went out of her way to make us feel comfortable. Laurie made sure we had access to all the resources. She even had father Mendyuk visit us whom she knew was Ukrainian like me which brought a lot of comfort to us.
Laurie was prompt with pain medications, and held my hand during the worst of the pain. I remember hearing a quote that perfectly summarizes our experience with Laurie: “people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” We are sad that this tragedy happened to us, but we are grateful for the physical and emotional support we received. Thank you so much Laurie for everything you did and continue to do for your patients.
