Katie was providing care for a patient, sent here by the Cancer Center, experiencing anemia and thrombocytopenia. The patient was sent to receive PRBCs and platelets that would require several hours to transfuse. The patient was very disappointed when she received the news she would need transfused because her birthday was the following day and she really did not want to be in the hospital on her 70th birthday, as she already spent so much time here for her cancer treatment. Katie knew the transfusions would run past midnight, leaving her patient at the hospital when it became her birthday. The patient was here alone so Katie had cookies Doordashed here and got a few of us to help sing her Happy Birthday! The patient was so thankful and became tearful. Katie not only took great care of the patient clinically, but she also went above and beyond to make a disappointing day, in this woman’s hard battle with cancer, not so heavy! Katie shows so much compassion for her patients and deserves to be recognized!
