The patient took many pictures with Abbi to remember this day. Seeing the patient's smile and hopeful expression reminded me of one of the reasons why I became a nurse in the first place!
If I was a patient in the hospital, I would choose Abbi to be my nurse. Not only does her compassion inspire me to be a better nurse, but she empowers patients and their families to feel hopeful in their hardest moments in life. Her energetic and positive charisma overwhelms the hearts of those she cares for and works with. As some might agree, hope is a necessary piece in the puzzle of healing. With hope, walking again is possible. Eating a normal meal is possible. Seeing your family again is possible. Being discharged from the hospital is possible. Forming a path to a healthier way of living is possible. With Abbi as your nurse, anything is possible!
A patient who was septic and in the ICU for long-term IV antibiotics, hemodynamic monitoring, and maintenance pleaded to attend her only son's high school graduation. Her son, who is autistic, would not only cherish the memory of such a grand accomplishment because of the social stipulations, but also because his mother might be present when he walks the stage. Abbi and the doctor quickly collaborated to develop a solution to the situation. How would the patient attend the graduation while maintaining inpatient status? Abbi searched the unit high and low for a hand-held mirror, perfume, deodorant, nail polish, and a hair care kit. She helped the patient get dressed in her own clothing, put makeup on, fix her hair, and do her nails. The doctor agreed that the patient could be temporarily discharged, all monitoring methods intact, to attend her son's high school graduation. With excitement, Abbi announced to the unit that the patient would be wheeled down the hall, similar to a fashion show, so that the patient might feel special, beautiful, and in high spirits for the occasion. Although the patient would be readmitted to the ICU after the graduation ceremony, she was ecstatic and extremely appreciative of Abbi and the unit's support, nonetheless. The patient took many pictures with Abbi to remember this day. Seeing the patient's smile and hopeful expression reminded me of one of the reasons why I became a nurse in the first place!
Abbi perfectly portrayed an example of patient advocacy and exceeded the expectations for quality patient care. I know Abbi's patients and coworkers see her for her kind heart and genuine personality. Good nurses are everywhere, but great nurses are hard to come by. I'm proud to nominate a SPECTACULAR nurse who just so happens to work here at UMC. Thank you, Abbi, for setting an example for us all!!
