My dad was admitted through the ER as a stroke patient. He was combative and not able to communicate his needs or understand commands. My dad is the most gentle, kind-hearted person and his behavior was the opposite of his normal demeanor. DeJuanna was the nurse who settled him into his room when he was transferred to the fifth floor. She was so incredibly kind and patient, and compassionate with him. Even in the state he was in, she treated him with such care and made us feel so much more at ease. She did not rush through our questions or ever seem in a hurry when she was in the room. She genuinely took the time to listen to our concerns and to help us understand what was happening. My dad was calmer when she would talk to him, and he could sense he was in safe hands. The next night when he was doing better and able to communicate more, she took the time to try and figure out what he was saying instead of just guessing or dismissing his words. DeJuanna is what I consider the definition of a true nurse...someone who goes into the field to help people and care for their needs...no matter how frustrating or hard those needs may be. She never once seemed aggravated with the extra tasks I am sure she took on while taking care of my dad. The impact she had on our family in the few hours we spent with her will stick with us for a lifetime. She made a scary time less frightening and put us all at ease.
