She went far beyond her duty as a bedside critical care nurse in supporting the transfer while caring for the patient and providing continual communication with the patient's family.
Taylor used not only her bedside nursing skill, but also her significant experience with patient movement to enable excellent patient care and facilitate a transfer to a higher level facility. The patient was in significant heart failure on an Impella pump and mechanical ventilator. Unfortunately, his large body habitus caused additional difficulty in procuring transportation to the accepting hospital. There were multiple cancellations by companies due to poorly communicated issues, and accepting hospital preferences/ complications. Taylor worked with the accepting coordinator and accepting charge nurse directly to smooth the process and ensure the patient would be transferred in a timely manner. She went far beyond her duty as a bedside critical care nurse in supporting the transfer while caring for the patient and providing continual communication with the patient's family. As a provider, I can testify that while we were doing everything possible in communication and advocacy, Taylor's interventions were pivotal to the success of this patient's transfer. And, thanks to her, the story has a happy ending. The accepting cardiologist reached out to the intensivist team several days after the transfer and let us know that the patient is expected to make a full recovery. Way to go, Taylor!
