Barron really impresses me. It was a Saturday evening around 7:30 pm. I was called about a patient in the emergency room who had an incarcerated incisional hernia. The CT showed a considerable amount of inflammation around the hernia. With this incarcerated hernia the patient had a bowel obstruction. The patient needed urgent surgery. Unfortunately, because of call issues we did not have an OR nurse available for call. I had to start looking for someone to come in. I was able to get him to come in, just as he was leaving his other job after a 12-hour shift. I described the situation, and he said he would be right there. In 45 mins, he was setting up the OR, having completely missed dinner. We operated on the patient and found her with an incarcerated hernia and bowel that we had to watch for several minutes to ensure it was viable. I believe any further delay would have caused that area to become ischemic and the patient would have needed a bowel resection. By the time we finished, it was almost 10 pm. Barron had to sit with the recovery room nurse while the patient was recovering. Throughout this, his good humor and steadfast loyalty showed through. Barron has been a great asset to the operating room and hospital. The patient and I will be forever grateful for his attitude, compassion, and willingness to come in on his time off.
