I am a Coumadin patient. Because my INR fluctuates and I have a history of DVTs and a PE near my heart which landed me bedridden in ICU, I never know what to expect during doctor visits. I have extreme white coat anxiety, especially since I have several other health conditions and had a very serious adverse reaction to a previous blood thinner. Clinic visits are not new to me, but they are always frightening. Through it all, Tara is always emotionally "there" for me, working tirelessly, and diligently, being kind and personable, warm and welcoming. She always greets me with a smile and helps me understand my medical issues and ramifications. She patiently explains things to me, sometimes more than once, until I get it. She doesn't assume that because I am an educated professional, I know medical terminology or procedures. Of utmost importance to her is my comfort, calmness, and reassurance that all will be well in the clinic and at home. Tara is also concerned about me as a person. She understands that being a Coumadin patient comes with its own emotional and exhausting situations such as trying to keep my INR in proper range and learning what foods have high Vitamin K content. I look forward to seeing Tara because I have developed a deep trust in her, and even on my bad days, she lifts my spirit by sharing personal stories about her wonderful 3 and 4-year-olds who keep me laughing. She obviously cares deeply for me as a person and not just a patient. Tara has become like family to me. I always want to hug her when I go to the clinic. Tara's knowledge and skills are evident. When my INR is out of range, Tara doesn't let me leave until she analyzes the cause and helps me find a solution to get back in range. She offers helpful tips to get me back in range quickly and educates me about other causes of INR range fluctuation - such as excess stress! Each time I follow Tara's advice, it works. Tara's tireless devotion always shines through- even when she has had a long day, has a headache, or is just tired from being a fantastic mom and wife. Her skill and passion for her work and the well-being of her patients have made a huge impression on me. She stands out as a nurse willing and able to go the extra mile just for her patients!
