More than anything, what Allie did was to listen to us. She wanted to make sure we were comfortable, but most of all she wanted to make sure our boys were safe.
There is one person we encountered during our stay that we feel is truly worthy of a DAISY Award and that person is Allie. We had the pleasure of having her as a nurse for our twin boys multiple times. One of the hardest moments each day was leaving the boys at night. We knew we couldn’t stay at the NICU 24/7 but we really wished we were able to. It was always a good night when we knew Allie would be the nurse. We knew we could rest soundly at home and not worry about their care. Allie is the perfect mix of personable and focused. She conversed with us and showed interest in our family. She also shared about herself ( she can ice skate) in a way that made us feel bonded to her. She constantly asked if we needed anything and went the extra mile to take care of the boys. We always said both our sons thought she was their girlfriend, because they really were so good for her!

Her actions one night really set her apart. One night, we were assigned a floating nurse. Before the shift started we expressed concern with not having a NICU nurse. The staff went on to explain the boys were strong and their current needs were less involved than other patients’s which is why they were assigned to floating nurses. Willing to give it a try, we stuck around to make sure the nurse was doing okay. After a few interactions with her, we quickly realized that she needed a refresher on NICU precautions and were worried about leaving the boys overnight. As I cried in the room, Allie came in for her daily visit to say hi. She saw that I was upset and inquired about what was wrong. She continued to check on us every hour or so after that and really wanted to make sure the problem was addressed. She said to let her know if we needed anything, and assured us that she would check on them a few times that night to make sure they were ok, even though she was not assigned to be their nurse. She didn’t need someone to tell her what was right. She just knew what to do, and she did it without recognition from anyone other than us. More than anything, what Allie did was to listen to us. She wanted to make sure we were comfortable, but most of all she wanted to make sure our boys were safe. We are so thankful for her, and know that KH Main is lucky to have her!
