I found out that I lost my best friend minutes before my surgery. Mary Malone (called MJ) hugged me, consoled me and related to my situation since she lost her best friend unexpectedly too. MJ talked to me, assuring me of the care that everyone would be giving me during my stay at the center. She explained everything that she will be performing appeasing my insecurities. Her voice was calm, her demeanor pleasant, and took her time not rushing everything like what I’ve seen many nurses do. I did not feel like a sick patient. I felt like I was talking to a good friend. MJ took her time to comfort me, made me feel comfortable, had me relaxed, and even had the anesthesiologist speak to me about their concerns for my health. He said I could cancel the procedure because of the stress I’m experiencing. MJ and the doctor gave me a chance to talk to my husband about it to make my decision. I decided to proceed with the surgery. Despite how busy the area was, MJ stayed with me for comfort whenever she had a chance. She went to the OR and held my hand until I was sedated. MJ has a warm, caring, and loving attitude towards her patients. We are not just a number for her; we are treated as human beings with fears and anxieties. I am fighting cervical cancer right now, and if I were approaching death in the hospital, she would be the nurse I would want with me, if I needed one. She truly embodies the modern-day Florence Nightingale. She deserves as many DAISIES as you can give her. There are hundreds of nurses out there, but very few who epitomize compassion, dedication, and nurturing love for another human being.
