I was so impressed by her familiarity with the patient, her knowledge of acute inpatient psychiatric care, and above all by her foresight, compassion, and unflappability.
I was the resident on call overnight when Jasmine notified me that a patient on our adolescent psychiatry unit had just returned confused from anesthesia. Due to unexplained mania and psychosis, this patient had required anesthesia for sedation to undergo needed diagnostic workup. At the start of the shift, Jasmine encouraged me to proactively brainstorm next steps if patient's mental status resulted in persistent agitation or safety concerns overnight. This planning ended up being indispensable.
Jasmine knew this patient from working with her on prior evenings. The patient's mental status changed rapidly over the course of the night, and at times patient in their confusion postured as if to physically harm staff. Although the patient was very confused and scared, the patient recognized Jasmine. Jasmine spent the night at their bedside, verbally re-directing them as needed and keeping me up to date so we could judiciously use as needed medications to help calm them and keep them safe.
Earlier during admission, patient had required restrictive interventions in similar situations. However, this night, despite worsening of the patient's mental status due to anesthesia, Jasmine was able to work with the patient and the floor team to keep the patient safe without the use of forced medications. Jasmine went above and beyond to keep this patient and staff members safe that night.
I was so impressed by her familiarity with the patient, her knowledge of acute inpatient psychiatric care, and above all by her foresight, compassion, and unflappability. She is an outstanding patient advocate and team leader. I feel lucky I had the opportunity to work with her that evening and am so grateful that our patients are under her care.
