When my twelve-year-old daughter developed severe lip swelling after an at-home drainage of an abscess, I took her to urgent care. Their concern for the infection’s location landed us in the emergency department. After the ED provider performed a bedside incision and drainage, she ordered IV antibiotics and some lab work. When the nurse came into the room, she could sense my daughter’s anxiety. The nurse not only took her time to explain what to expect, but she also took my daughter’s mind off of the IV insertion by talking about their favorite video games. When her blood pressure unexpectedly dropped to critically low numbers, this nurse worked quickly and calmly with the provider to give her resuscitative fluids and find the cause. The nurse kept a close eye on my daughter and after two more drops in her blood pressure, the decision was made to transfer her to Levine’s. Again, this nurse went above and beyond to explain the transfer procedure and ease my daughter’s mind. The nurse not only demonstrated fast-acting, critically thinking nursing interventions, but she did so with a patient and compassionate demeanor, which eased my anxious pre-teen’s mind (and mine!).
