I was in a terrible place emotionally. McKenna was kind, caring, and attentive, and tried to ease my anxiety.
McKenna cared for me over a four day stay at Sky Ridge Hospital. I needed to have my gallbladder out, but there were complications with this surgery, because I have cirrhosis of the liver. I was anxiety ridden over the decision as to whether to have the surgery. In addition, in this same week, my father had a stroke in a foreign country, and was being transported back to the U.S. Due to my health challenges, I couldn’t be there to greet him. To add on, my husband was suffering a mental health crisis, and couldn’t be at the hospital to help advocate and support me. I was in a terrible place emotionally. McKenna was kind, caring, and attentive, and tried to ease my anxiety. When it appeared that a surgeon was willing to do the surgery, there was radio silence from this surgeon’s PA, as well as from the surgeon himself. Mixed messages were being sent our way, and my anxiety became worse. McKenna promised me that she would get ahold of the surgeon, no matter what. She had many other patients but continued to persist in her communication, until they answered. This may not seem like a huge deal to some, but to me, her tenacity in advocating for me was everything. I had finally decided to go forward with the surgery, and I just wanted to get it over with. I wanted to stop the physical pain, as well as my increasing anxiety, on a very difficult day. I am forever grateful to her for her compassion, and her exceptional care.
