Lynn was very empathetic and initiated special contact with the Surgeon's Assistant, Coordinating OR scheduler, Anesthesia, CRNA, SS Manager, SSU, PACU, and PHAS charge nurses to share the information that was important to the mother in giving her son the best surgical experience she could.
Lynn interviewed the mother of a young man coming in for surgery with a history of anoxic brain injury from seizures when young. Mother requested restraints ready at the bedside and placed on the patient on arrival. "He views restraints as a security blanket." She also stated he needed to be placed in a room on admission as the waiting room could escalate his behavior, as he needs a low-stimulus environment. Stated he is "on or off and behavior can escalate and become very aggressive." She provided suggestions to view his prior anesthesia record to aid in giving him a positive experience. The mother needed to stay with the patient until he was asleep.
As a true patient advocate, Lynn tirelessly made all these contacts and efforts because of her professional dedication and compassion in giving her best efforts to help this patient have a very positive and comfortable experience.
When the patient was coming back 2 months later for an additional surgery, Lynn again did the Anesthesia interview. She said the patient's mother said both his and her experience from beginning to end was excellent, so Lynn again contacted all of the individuals and specialties who would again be a part of the patient's experience reminding them of what was important to the patient, and his mother during his hospital experience. She again contacted the surgeon's office for an order for restraints to have them ready as before. She thanked everyone for giving the patient a wonderful experience stating "We need to duplicate it," for his upcoming surgery.
The Mother was contacted the day after the patient's 2nd surgery and she said everything "was fabulous and everyone was so accommodating!" This all started with Lynn’s individual, compassionate, and attentive care in advocating for this patient and his mother. She was innovative in reaching out to all those who would interact with the patient and his mother to share best practices for this individual's hospital and surgical experiences. Lynn is a very committed WellSpan employee who desires to give all her patients a surgical experience that will make them want to keep returning to WellSpan for all their surgical needs.
