Ashleigh worked to develop a routine that would help the patient in their new environment and positively impact their behavior.

PCU recently had a very challenging patient who was with us for more than 40 days. The patient was autistic, had experienced significant life-altering changes at home, and had no family to visit. Many care team members felt overwhelmed with the care this particular patient required. Ashleigh worked to develop a routine that would help the patient in their new environment and positively impact their behavior. She helped educate the rest of the nursing team on setting boundaries with the patient and offered insight on giving them the best care they needed.

Ashleigh left her phone number in the patient’s room so the nursing team could help the patient call her in the morning or whenever they became agitated, greatly assisting with their care. She also came in a couple of times on her days off to take the patient on walks or spend some time with them. This made such a difference for both the care team and the patient.

Ashleigh also recognized that this patient had no clothing, shoes, or belongings to take to their new group home upon discharge. She organized a clothing drive, and everyone on the unit brought in new clothing items, shoes, personal hygiene products, and sensory toys for the patient. Ashleigh indeed went above and beyond for this patient. Her advocacy in ensuring that not only the patient’s medical needs were met but their psychological needs were as well is a testament to the compassionate and dedicated nurse she is. PCU is blessed to have her on their team!
