I had an emergency surgery for a tear in my colon that resulted in an unexpected ostomy bag. My stay was complicated, and I was hospitalized for 2.5 weeks. The team of nurses who led my care included Mary and Crystal during the day, and Haley and Melissa overnight.
I was beyond scared when I arrived and these women worked tirelessly to make me feel comfortable both mentally and physically. How do they know the right balance? It must be a combination of gut feelings and experience. They knew when to push me to do a little more, when I just needed a break, when to give me some space after bad news, and when to approach me after for a pep talk.
Mary and Crystal made time to pamper me by washing my hair, my body, and my face when time allowed. I was worried they were not allowed to do that, but they assured me it was part of the healing process!
Overnight, I experienced the same magnificent care from Haley and Melissa. They each had their own unique way of bringing me comfort (not the medication kind). Haley is a true master at “pillow art” which may sound silly, but when you are struggling to find a way to even lay down without pain her ability to shift things gave me comfort to sleep which was desperately needed! Melissa’s energy and understanding were contagious, no matter how grumpy I may have been. Her simple presence in my room brought a smile to my face. I must mention how hard it is to get to know someone through the night, but these two women made such an impact that I could not help but feel amazing in their care.
I was discharged the day before my 50th birthday, and they happened to not be working that day. I sadly said my goodbyes to each of them in advance. On the morning of my discharge, the team came in on their day off to see me off. The love and care I felt at that moment is indescribable. I had a whole new tribe backing me up. This team of four women impacted my life both while in the hospital and now at home. I think of at least one of them each day.
I have made several visits since my discharge just for a hello and hug from them. The smiles that they share when they see me are proof of the love and care they cannot help but feel for their patients and their roles in our lives.
