Vanessa is an incredibly compassionate, caring person. She knew that the best option for the patient would be to have the procedure done that day.
There was a complex patient who desperately needed her g-button placed. The patient's parent unfortunately misunderstood the NPO times, and the patient was fed later than they should have been. This would have caused a short delay for the procedure. The scheduled surgeon was unable to perform the surgery due to scheduling conflicts. Vanessa understood how important this g-button placement was, not only for the patient, but for the family. The mother had no ride home, the patient's NG had been removed due to the procedure taking place that day. The patient previously had difficulty when NGs were placed. Instead of just letting the patient be rescheduled, Vanessa went above and beyond to do what was right for this child. She recognized the medical need and the emotional toll this was taking on the parents. Vanessa reached out to the OR, as well as upper management, to see if there was any way for the patient to have the procedure today or if there was the potential for another surgeon to perform the procedure. She also consulted with social work and the general surgery NP to ensure the patient had the resources they needed. Due to her diligence and hard work, the patient was able to get their g-button placed with a doctor that same day.

The family had no idea the work Vanessa did behind the scenes to make this happen. The impact of Vanessa's actions was vast. This patient truly needed this g-button for medical reasons, and there had been several bad experiences the family had gone through when the patient pulled out the NG tube. The parents also had expressed how exhausted they were from being up all night making sure the child's NG didn't get pulled out. It would have been much easier to just tell the family the procedure would have to be rescheduled. But Vanessa is an incredibly compassionate, caring person. She knew that the best option for the patient would be to have the procedure done that day. She made an incredible difference in this patient's care and family's wellbeing. She never expects any recognition and does these things simply because that is the type of nurse and person she is.
