Shelby brought D a birthday box and had all the staff sign a banner. When I spoke to D he was so happy that his birthday was celebrated even when hospitalized.
My 13-year-old, D, was hospitalized. He had to have surgery. Shelby was our nurse for several days, and this is how I noticed what an exceptional nurse she was. On her first day with us, she introduced herself, gave very specific information on the plan of care for the day, and involved D in the conversation. On another day I myself was having a very difficult time as a mother of a hospitalized child. We had just gotten the news that he developed an abscess as a result of his ruptured appendix. The length of stay would be longer than expected. At that point, the stress of the situation had me very emotional and I was crying so much that I felt embarrassed. Miss Shelby’s reassuring words and presence helped me to calm down. She demonstrated that Texas Children’s family-centered care is authentic and that nurses such as Shelby help not only medically but emotionally also. Last, but not least, D would have to be hospitalized for his 14th birthday. The day before his birthday was the only night I was able to go home to replenish supplies and care for my other son due to my husband’s work schedule. This meant I would not be back to the hospital until late evening on his birthday. While I was gone, Shelby brought D a birthday box and had all the staff sign a banner. When I spoke to D he was so happy that his birthday was celebrated even when hospitalized. I later arrived with more birthday treats which made his day special even under stressful circumstances. Shelby Maiorano RN went above and beyond to care for my son and is a true DAISY Nurse.
