Aubri created an ostomy PowerPoint specific to this patient, including photos of the product preferences, appliance cut-outs, and step-by-step instructions on the exact way to replace his ostomy appliance.
Aubri Voiles has been a dedicated member of this 8th floor family since 2017. She started on the floor as a CA working her way through nursing school. Since that time, we have had the opportunity to mentor her, coach her, and watch her grow into the Extraordinary Nurse she is today. Aubri started her nursing career as a new graduate nurse in October 2020. We all know what 2020 and after has held for those in healthcare; however, Aubri has met those challenges head-on. She excelled as a nurse very quickly and immediately took complex patient assignments, which she handles with grace. Aubri has signed up as a primary nurse for some of our more complicated and sick patients. She takes pride in getting to learn their cares and needs inside and out to become an expert on that patient, their family, and their care.

One such example involves a little chronic short gut patient who is admitted quite often with central line infections. Early on, Aubri signed up to be one of his primary nurses. She soon became the expert regarding his care on the unit. This little one can decompensate quickly, but Aubri notices when his vital signs are abnormal for him, his personality is off, or even when his I/Os are unusual, and responds quickly. One of the main reasons he gets so sick is due to his ostomy chronically leaking, and his family and nurses struggle to keep it on and clean. Aubri learned the specific way his ostomy appliance had to be placed and all the tips and tricks to get it to adhere and stay. She then went out of her way to come help other nurses replace it even when he isn’t her patient. Aubri created an ostomy PowerPoint specific to this patient, including photos of the product preferences, appliance cut-outs, and step-by-step instructions on the exact way to replace his ostomy appliance.

With each admission, Aubri prints out this PowerPoint and puts it up in his room, creates templates for his ostomy appliances, and helps other team members manage his ostomy. This has helped to not only teach other team members but was also sent home with MOC and foster parents to provide a step-by-step guide. With this teaching tool, the patient’s risk for infection dramatically decreased and it is because of Aubri’s dedication and desire to become the “expert” on each of her patients’ needs. This is only one example of the exceptional patient and family-centered care Aubri values as part of her practice, and the compassion, attention, and care she puts into each patient she encounters. She provides exceptional patient care and focuses on individualizing patient safety every single shift. She epitomizes how at Children’s Hospital Colorado; it truly is different.
