My mother was admitted to the Medical Surgical floor. My first visit was on Saturday, as I had just returned from a two-week vacation out of the country. I was very concerned and felt bad that I was not here on the day of her admission.

My friend and I arrived to see her sitting in the chair with papers to read and fall precautions in place. Kristen was sitting by the door. She jumped up and introduced herself to us, and she immediately engaged us by giving an update on my mother's condition. It was impressive that she knew her history, as well as her current status and plan of care for the next day. Even more impressive was the personal information she was able to get my mom to tell her.

My mom has dementia, and on several of my visits to her care home, she does not know me or talk; she just has an empty stare. Kristen spent time talking to her, asking her questions, and, most of all, listening to her. She shared that mom has four daughters, used to tap dance, and was an active bowler; all things that are true. I was so impressed that she took the time to learn and listen to my mom.

Mom also asked for the newspaper, and Kristen took the time to print off some reading materials for her. In our visit, we saw compassion, empathy, knowledge, engagement, safety, and a true sense of caring. I am an RN, and my friend with me is a retired nurse executive from Tucson. Kristen is a find for you, a role model for others, and above all, a competent, compassionate nurse for your patients.

We enjoyed talking to Kristen and were able to engage her as to where she went to school, her job as a float nurse between two hospitals, etc. She has a sense of pride about her profession, enthusiasm for her career, and integrity as a nurse. We left feeling thankful and uplifted to see nursing care as we practiced. Kristen is exceptional, and she deserves recognition.
