He answered questions with honesty and compassion, treating all of us with respect, kindness, and empathy.
Our sister was born with a disability and was living with dementia when she entered hospice. Matt, fully aware of her disability and dementia, always saw her as a person. He learned she was no longer able to communicate her needs and wishes verbally, so he became adept at reading the obvious and subtle cues to learn how she was doing on any given day. He used his clinical skills to assess her needs and find creative ways to meet them.

During the time she received hospice services, Matt interacted purposefully and meaningfully with our sister, as well as her family and the staff and residents at the group home where she lived. Matt offered that unique combination of realism and optimism to our sister and those around her, facing the reality of her situation but assuring that she was comfortable, both physically and emotionally. He answered questions with honesty and compassion, treating all of us with respect, kindness, and empathy.

As team leader for her hospice services, Matt coordinated care with the entire hospice team. He was an exemplary role model for other nurses who were shadowing him. He obtained appropriate equipment, supplies, and medications to allow our sister to be safely and comfortably cared for.

Matt always put the patient first. Our sister was his top priority, but our family and her “other” family at her group home were also priorities. Matt was her advocate, constantly focusing on what was best for her at any given point and then adjusting as her condition changed. Matt was able to be present when she left this life, which was a blessing for all of us. We appreciate Matt’s deep and genuine affection for our sister and are grateful for the outstanding care he provided for her on her journey.
