Mary took me, a burnt out nurse of only 3 years, and made me see there is still hope and compassion to offer to the table. She, by far, goes above and beyond for her staff and patients. I was drowning on numerous occasions and instead of asking me "What can I do to help you?" She just knew and took the load off for me. In particular, though, I know our floor just opened up a comfort suite. And this particular night, Mary had the comfort patient in which a family was told their mother was going to pass days ago yet was still with us, this being a week later. An out-of-town family that thought they'd be there for only a day or two was also with us a week later. They were not packed and prepared for the longer stay and didn't want to impose on the staff in previous shifts because they didn't prepare well enough, as they put it. They didn't ask Mary for anything either, but Mary knew. Mary made sure they were just as comfortable as the patient. She offered them more comfortable sleeping arrangements, gave them toiletries and fresh linens. Donated clothes to them. Absolutely made sure their passing mother was comfortable and explained things to them that just put them at ease. I cried because, in that moment all my complaints and feelings of being burnt out had come to light....and every day I will carry on as a nurse and find myself with negative feelings...I will softly say to myself, "What will Mary do?" because she's AMAZING.
