Karyn approached this particular patient with kindness, and patience and was able to establish boundaries with him which were maintained throughout the shift, and the following shifts regardless if he was assigned to her or not.
I've had the pleasure of working alongside Karyn as well as in a supervisory role, and now as her Nurse Director. Karyn continuously goes above and beyond for her patients. I've witnessed Karyn deliver compassionate care to so many patients including the challenging ones. There was a long stay patient on Yaw ATU who was extremely behavioral and managing his behavior was difficult for many nurses and nursing assistants. However Karyn approached this particular patient with kindness, and patience and was able to establish boundaries with him which were maintained throughout the shift, and the following shifts regardless if he was assigned to her or not. At change of shift one morning, the patient suddenly became unresponsive while sitting in the chair and a code stroke was called. The patient was difficult to arose and had very delayed responses, and was not responding to the providers. Karyn knelt down in front of the patient to be at eye level with him, although his eyes were barely opened. She states "do you know who I am?" and without hesitation, he says "Karrrryn". And the providers were shocked because he would only respond to her. Whether he was being behavioral or truly had a change in mental status, it was the rapport and trust that was built between the two of them that produced a response. I was so happy to have witnessed, how impactful it can be to build trusting relationships and a rapport with patients regardless of how challenging the patient may be. This is not the first time I've witnessed Karyn do what she does best and that is providing exceptional care to all the patients who have had the pleasure of having her as their nurse. She's embedded in BMC and that shows through in the way she treats all of her patients. As a new nurse director, I am so honored to have her on my team.
